Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau on Tuesday announced its readiness to partner the Saudi Arabia Investigation Bureau and other agencies within and outside Nigeria on aviation safety.
Chief Executive Officer, AIB, Akin Olateru, announced this in Abuja at the Nigerian Aviation Workshop Symposium 2020.
The symposium which had aviation stakeholders and operators in allied agencies in attendance, had its theme as ‘Safety Management Systems Approach to Aircraft Accidents and Incidents in Nigerian Airspace,’ and was organised by the AIB
He also said the AIB had entered into Memorandum of Understanding with other organisations such as the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nigerian Air Force, University of Ilorin, as well as the University of Lagos.
“We are in the process of signing up with other organisations like the Navy, NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency), Police, Saudi Arabia Investigation Bureau, among other organisations,” Olateru stated.
He added, “We also look forward to harmonising the roles of other relevant agencies, stakeholders and industrial interests towards integration, enhanced coordination and cooperation during aviation accidents in Nigeria and within the Nigerian airspace.”
The AIB boss told participants at the event that safety management would ensure that all safety risks were identified, assessed and satisfactorily mitigated.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation, Hassan Musa, said recently, Nigeria had experienced few aviation accidents and some serious incidents.
He noted that the AIB being the body with the statutory responsibility to investigate occurrences had investigated these accidents and had issued safety recommendations, where necessary
.Musa observed that it might be from this point of view that the bureau decided to organise the symposium to explore the implementation of safety management systems as one of the ways of preventing accidents and serious incidents in the Nigerian airspace.
