Chairman of Air Peace, Mr. Allen Onyema, yesterday said former sportsmen and women who have made Nigeria proud in international tournaments deserve to be honoured and remembered.
To this end, he said the airline would sponsor the building of a Hall of Fame where the names of key national sports icons would be inscribed.
He spoke in Lagos yesterday at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA’s) second conversation series tagged, “FESTAC of Sports” held in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.
Onyema was honoured by the NIIA “for his passionate commitment to peace and security and his penchant for peace and harmony in Nigeria.”
Represented by his daughter, Nnenna, the Air Peace Chairman stated that Sports has become a veritable tool not just for national peace, unity and cohesion but also a powerful tool for international peace and diplomacy.
He noted that the Hall of Fame would feature the past heroes of the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1980 Green Eagles team among others.
In addition, the Chairman said the airline would sponsor an event to honour members of the 1980 Green Eagles while members of the team who are still living have been made Special Ambassadors of Air Peace.
With this, they are entitled to fly on Air Peace free of charge to every destination the airline flies to.
