Nigeria’s Aviation Industry Takes a Giant Leap: NAHCO Approved to Handle Radioactive Materials

The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) has made history by becoming the first aviation handling company in Nigeria to receive approval from the Federal Government to handle radioactive materials. This groundbreaking decision was facilitated by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).¹

The approval was announced in a joint communique issued after a meeting on February 25, 2025, in Abuja. According to the communique, NAHCO is now authorized to manage radioactive materials shipments, providing a significant relief to importers and exporters who were previously affected by the embargo.

The company’s Group Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Olumuyiwa Olumekun, expressed gratitude to NCAA and NNRA for the approval, assuring that NAHCO has implemented rigorous processes to ensure full compliance with safety standards.

The meeting that led to the approval also resolved to adopt NNRA’s implementation plan, form a technical working group, and develop a joint action plan with timelines. Both agencies agreed to commence joint training programs, conduct emergency preparedness drills, and harmonize licensing processes.
