Ryanair Sells €850 Million Bond, The First in Three Years

Ryanair on Tuesday announced it has started selling bonds in the value of €850 million in an attempt to salvage its financeswhich was severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is the second bond sale the airline company has launched and the first one in three years. Interested parties have so far made orders worth more than €4.4 billion, which is five times the amount Ryanair wanted to sell.

The Dublin-based company reported in June its first-quarter revenue dropped by 95% compared to the same period last year as a result of the pandemic.

Ryanair sold €850 million bond, its first since 2017. The low-cost carrier’s bond sale indicates that European debt markets are slowly reopening to airlines, which have withstood the initial COVID-19 kick.

On September 8, 2020 Ryanair became the second European airline to issue a bond sale since the pandemic began. However, Ryanair’s bond sale, worth €850 million, is four times greater than the hybrid bond sale of €200 million made by Finnar in August 2020.
