On July 16, 2023, the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, announced that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would release the latest Captain America movie on airlines. While airlines get access to plenty of new movies, including some still playing in theaters, much faster than Netflix and Amazon, releasing a film on airlines only is unusual.
Airlines pay top dollar to get the latest movies but sometimes get a good deal if the movie studio considers having its film early on aircraft a part of its marketing plan. Incidentally, did you know that the first mainstream studio film ever shown on an airline was the 1961 hit “By Love Possessed” starring Lana Turner? Tran World Airlines (TWA) played the film in first class for Boeing 707 passengers flying between New York and Los Angeles. Other airlines soon followed suit, and in 1992, Dubai-based Emirates became the first airline to install seat-back screens in all its planes.
The release comes during the SAG-AFTRA strike
The release of the latest Marvel Captain America film “Brave New World” comes in the middle of a landmark strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). The strike coincided with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and is the most significant disruption to film and television since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Usually, when a blockbuster movie is released, there will be a star-studded Premiere to help catch the public’s attention. Because of the strike, this was not possible and is perhaps another reason why the movie is debuting on the airlines.
MCU thinks that the film will be a passenger favorite
When announcing that Captain America: Brave New World would be released exclusively on airplane TVs, 50-year-old Boston native Feige is quoted by the movie news website Hard Drive as saying:
“We know that Marvel fans are extremely passionate about our films, and we see in our data that people are watching them more and more on the little TVs on the backs of the seats in front of them that airplanes provide. We want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to see the next Captain America movie — which legally, I have to state that Chris Evans is not in — the way they want to see it.
“And let me be perfectly clear: this is not at all due to any waning interest in MCU movies and television. We believe that people simply prefer the ambiance of an airplane in the background of our films and enjoy taking in these incredible stories while traveling to faraway destinations. I guess they just love these movies so much that they want to experience them on the way to exciting vacations or something like that.”
About Captain America
The superhero Captain America first appeared in Marvel Comics in December 1940. In civilian life, Captain America was a frail man called “Steve Rogers” who, when joining the army to fight in World War Two, was given an experimental serum that resulted in him having enhanced strength, endurance, and reaction times.
Fitted out in an American flag-inspired costume and with an indestructible shield, Captain America and his sidekick Bucky Barnes took on the Axis power’s villains. At the war’s end, Marvel stopped printing Captain America comics and didn’t resurrect the superhero proper until 1964.
In the 2010s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) released a s:
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
